This picture depicts a swimmer heading into the ocean at Paraparaumu Beach in New Zealand. The picture can be read as an allegory of a woman looking out to the future. The freight train rolling by in the background represents time passing. The wave breaking at the woman's feet weaves a metaphor about her life history. It traces a curve back into the past and into the future. Where it merges with the shoreline we see the enormity of time represented by the rampart of hills. The woman appears to be facing a decision. Most immediately, there is the decision of whether to plunge into the water or not but her gaze is directed out across the ocean into the last light of the day suggesting that she also is facing important decisions about her future and looking to those choices.
